Today’s prompt from this list
A blank page is the most common reason people give up on a gratitude journal. A good prompt fixes that. It points your attention somewhere specific, so you write “my neighbor shoveled my walk before I woke up” instead of “my neighbors.” Specific entries tend to bring the feeling back, and that’s the point of the practice. (Greater Good in Action, “Gratitude Journal”)
The 365 prompts below are original to Sunrise Gratitude. They are grouped into twelve themes so you can pick what fits your day. Some people work through one a day for a year. Others open the list only when they feel stuck. Both work.
How to use these prompts
- Pick one, not five. One prompt answered in detail is better than a list of quick ones. Write two or three sentences, and add why it mattered.
- Mix the themes. Variety helps keep the practice from going stale. In one study, counting blessings once a week raised well-being, while doing it three times a week did not, which suggests that how you practice matters as much as how often. (Lyubomirsky, Sheldon & Schkade, 2005)
- Go small on hard days. The hard-day prompts are deliberately modest. One line is enough.
- Share one. When a prompt leads you to a person, consider telling them. A gratitude letter is the deeper version of this.
Want a three-line format to answer these in? See how to start a gratitude journal, or use the free Sunrise Journal, which shows a fresh prompt every morning and keeps your entries private on your device.

Common questions
How many gratitude prompts should I answer each day?
One is enough. Researchers who study gratitude journals usually ask people to list a few things (often three to five) and to write about them in some detail. Depth matters more than length, so a single prompt answered thoughtfully is a great day’s practice.
What are good gratitude journal prompts for adults?
Prompts that lead you to specific people and moments work best, for example “Who made your life a little easier this week, and what exactly did they do?” or “What small thing went right today that could have gone wrong?” The People, Everyday moments, and Growth sections above are written with adults in mind.
What are good gratitude prompts for kids?
Keep them concrete and short: “What was the best part of your day?”, “Who helped you today?”, or “What food are you thankful for?” Younger children can draw their answer. The Kids and teens section has 35 prompts, including ten written for teenagers.
Can I print these gratitude prompts?
Yes. Use the Print button on this page and your browser will print a clean list of all 365 prompts without the photos or buttons. You’re welcome to print copies for your family, classroom, or group.
Is there a gratitude prompt for every day of the year?
Yes. There are exactly 365 prompts. The box at the top of this page picks one based on today’s date, and the free Sunrise Journal also shows a different prompt every morning.
